Paige Mills (They/Them) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Embrun, Ontario. They have just completed their Visual and Creative Arts Advanced Diploma at Sheridan College in Oakville. Paige has been drawing ever since they were a child. Pursuing it throughout high school, Paige was awarded the “Certificate of Concentration in Visual and Performing Arts” at Cardinal Leger Secondary School. After enrolling in the Art Fundamentals program at Sheridan, Paige started to truly fall in love with the art they were creating. Their subject matter has mostly been about their identity and their sense of self. Their body, their emotions, whatever they’re feeling, it can find a way into Paige’s work. Paige’s main art mediums are acrylic paints, and printmaking.
Statement from the Artist
The main theme and subject matter in most of my work is myself and my experiences as a young adult who experiences mental illness. I struggle with depression, anxiety, depersonalization, derealization, disassociation, and avoidant personality disorder, and how I respond to these issues is present in my catalog of work. My self portraits cover a wide variety of emotions, and invite the viewers to put themselves in my shoes. There is almost always some kind of figure that represents myself. The nude human body is something I feature in my work, and I use it to represent an extreme amount of vulnerability. The raw human form with nothing else, stripped down and bare for everyone to see.
My artistic process usually goes the same way when I start to brainstorm on an idea. It starts with me thinking about something happening to me in my life, and I end up writing a bunch of notes and statements. Those come accompanied by various sketches and tons of different ideas for the final product. I then refine my ideas, and consult my friends for any feedback. My friends are people who are very important to me, and they are artists who I can trust with giving me critique and inspiration. I am primarily a painter, but I also practice printmaking and sculpture.
